ALZHEIMERS PATIENTS' EATING PROBLEMS TRY RED PLATES

ADVICE FOR CAREGIVERS

Sometimes alzheimer and dementia patients don't want to eat. Often it is simple things that put the patient off their food, perhaps the food is served too hot or the patient has chewing difficulties.
According to Bob del Marco of the Alzheimers Reading Room, using red plates encourages patients to eat!
Patients sometimes have chewing difficulties, so check dentures and also glasses should be on. Depression and dehydration are also sometimes causes of lack of appetite. Perhaps the patient needs more exercise.
Other possible causes are constipation, and lack of variety in the food.
Research has also shown that regular small meals are better than two or three large ones.
