WHAT IS ALZHEIMERS DISEASE?
Research indicates that alzheimers disease is associated with plaques and tangles in the brain. The effect of the disease is to destroy the brain cells, leading to loss of memory, cognitive difficulties and ultimately death because of the steady deterioration in health. In particular the messages from the brain will cease to control breathing and this or chronic illness will be the ultimate cause of death.
An alzheimers patient can live for up to twenty years with loving care. Even in the latter stages we now know that the person inside is still there and like someone sleeping they can be reached. Music and song and gentle contact often achieve what was previously thought impossible and patients often can respond.
