FASTING AND MEMORY

It is now widely accepted that fasting is beneficial to the brain and thus the memory. For the young this should become a part of life, like healthy eating and not smoking. The immediate benefit is improved memory and the long term gain is to reduce the possibility of dementia and Alzheimer's.  Like so many health issues what is good for the brain is also good for the heart. For those who are already victims of dementia and Alzheimer's, fasting twice a week helps to slow down the advance of the disease. What is recommended is to wait for twelve hours after breakfast before eating again. Annually, a more lengthy fast and detox should be considered.
The reason that simple short period fasting works is that a state of ketosis takes place and the brain and body metabolism produces substances called ketone bodies. These have a positive effect on the brain cells and may improve memory. However, you should consult your doctor before fasting.
