ALZHEIMER'S? COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS IF YOU DON'T LIVE IN CHINA
There are now 9 million Alzheimer's victims in China and only about 300 doctors with sufficient knowledge of the disease to deal with the problem. Most victims are cared for in the early stages by family, as they are in most countries. However, care in the later stages, when the patient needs the benefit of very specialised care and knowledge is sadly lacking. Because of the 'one child' policy, the number of family members available for care is also under pressure.
The average age in China is now 76, which is a great improvement, but also creates more potential dementia and Alzheimer's victims. In addition, the trend towards Western diets, job stress and pollution are also contributing to the problem.
A massive increase in numbers is about to happen and some say that this could be 'China's Biggest Crisis Of The Century'.However, with China's vast cash wealth and a determined government, steps will no doubt soon be taken to remedy the looming tragedy.
